WHAT DOES A SUPPORT WORKER DO?

MND NZ Support Workers provide free, personalised support and advocacy for almost every person with motor neurone disease in New Zealand, from Stewart Island to Northland.

Our Support Workers co-ordinate services for their clients from multi-disciplinary teams of physiotherapists, dietitians, occupational therapists, speech language therapists, and community nurses at every District Health Board in New Zealand.

Support Workers also act on their client’s behalf to navigate government agencies and specialist equipment services.

MND NZ Support Worker Kate Moulson

Kate is one of seven specialist Support Workers nationwide. She talks about how she supports her MND clients in the video below.

Kate says helping people with MND navigate the health system is a really important part of her job. “Quite often people who get MND are fit and healthy and have little idea about how it all fits together. I tend to be quite active in making sure people are linked into the right services at the right time.”

Living with MND is incredibly challenging, says Kate. “If I can make their journey easier and less stressful, it’s very rewarding,” she says.
